LinkedIns Overused Buzzwords for 2017 - Do You Really Need to Avoid Them LinkedIns 2017 Buzzwords Are Out! Even in the midst of big changes at LinkedIn, the company has stuck to its annual tradition of posting a list of overused buzzwords. As they say, they “want to help you start the year of right”â€"and one way to do that is by writing a LinkedIn profile that doesn’t sound like everyone else’s. LinkedIn has gotten a sense of humor this year! They provide some amusing examples of profiles from the likes of Queen Victoria, claiming to be a “reliable monarch with a proven track record in governing empires,” and Leonardo Da Vinci, a “detail oriented self-starter with experience in drawing.” Point made! Why Do We Use Buzzwords? LinkedIn did some additional delving into why people continue to use buzzwords when everyone else is using them. They identified four main factors: Ease of use and the effort required to be creative; the sense that if other people are using the buzzwords, those people and their words must be right; the desire to “fit in” to a group or industry; and a lack of confidence in conveying one’s own achievements. While these explanations have value, I have some other thoughts on LinkedIn’s list, which I will share in a moment. The List Following is this year’s list of words to avoid. But I say take LinkedIn’s admonishment to “avoid” them with a grain of salt. Maybe there’s a good reason a lot of people use these words. Maybe some of them are important and actually work! Let’s take a look: Specialized Leadership Passionate Strategic Experienced Focused Expert Certified Creative Excellent Here are my thoughts on the top five: Specialized. This word appears on the list for the first time ever. How interesting that a word meant to make someone stand out has the effect of sounding distinctly un-special. To avoid “specialized” or “specialize” in your profile, simply state what you do, and it will be clear to your audience that you specialize in whatever that is. Recruiters are only searching on the term “specialized” if they are looking for skills in specialized equipment or specialized programs. So banish the buzzword if you don’t have one of those specific skills. Leadership. This is a tough one. Isn’t leadership the thing that everyone is looking for? I can’t see stripping it out of every leader’s profile, especially because it appears in 10 of LinkedIn’s approved Skills. Don’t overuse the term, but don’t avoid it if it’s integral to what you do. Here are effective keywords that include the buzzword and that you should continue to include in your profile if they describe you: Passionate. Demonstrate your passion! Let us hear the excitement in your “voice.” Tell us stories of how you went after things you wanted and completed challenging projects with energy and enthusiasm. Saying you are passionate is a cop-out, as demonstrated by its move to 3rd place from 4th last year. Good writing will exude passion without relying on the term itself. Strategic. This is another tough one, since phrases that contain “strategic” comprise 10 actual core competencies/skills that recruiters search for on LinkedIn. Use the word sparingly, but I would not recommend eliminating it from your profile if it’s a keyword for your industry. Experienced. Okay, yeah, this is overused. I personally like to state the number of years of experience a client has in an industry to show a depth of, well, experience. But saying you have “12 years of experience” is different than claiming to be “experienced.” LinkedIn does have four Skills that include their self-identified buzzword. But if you’re defaulting to the adjective “Experienced” to describe yourself, look for other ways to convey how many years you’ve been doing what you do and how well you know your field. What do you think about the remaining five buzzwords, Focused, Expert, Certified, Creative, and Excellent? Don’t Overdo It! Whatever our opinions on any individual buzzword, the clear fact is that putting more than one buzzword in a sentence or phrase is not going to make you stand out. It doesn’t work to default to a string of these terms in an effort to sound good, and doing so will have the opposite effect. Leonardo Da Vinci’s fake headline above is a great example of the downside of overused terminology. But you are not going to avoid using all these buzzwords! My advice: Use them in moderation. Be aware. Do your best to find other alternatives. And if there are not alternatives, use the buzzwords, very carefully, with pride. Save Save

Fell (2001) states that evidence shows that firms with ethics programs have a lower percentage of inside directors on their compensation committees than do firms without ethics programs. I Just do not understand her lack of motivation as my company is a great place to work and we get very competitive raises each year. I have a conscious and was raised to be an honest person. My father always said that taking even a pen from work was stealing. Second, my secretary actions are morally incorrect as they go against every value that I was ever taught. When we go to work, we should be productive and work toward the goals of the organization. We should adhere to the standards of the organization as well as our own standards. My secretary is clearly not adhering to any standards whatsoever. She is taking up space and collecting a paycheck she does not deserve. Furthermore, my secretary actions since I have been with this department (for he past five years) are causing me a high level of dissonance because I believe that a person’s work ethic should be of the highest degree. I wish every day that I was her supervisor so I could terminate her employment. I Just cannot believe that our supervisor does not see what she does everyday and those human resources do not scrutinize the time entries more closely. I have thought about saying something to my supervisor but what this secretary does or does not do at work is none of my business. Breen I believe what Breen is trying to say in his essay is that the Englishmen that came to Virginia were very different from the settlers of other colonies and they had a much different society develop than what was typical in the other colonies. They were a highly individualistic society. Breen believes that the personalities of those who came to Virginia were, in part what caused Virginias society to become so individualistic. Being so individualistic didnt exactly work out so well for the structure of society or the well being of the colonists. Breen says that the first people to come to Virginia were in no way a random sample of seventeenth-century English society (23). Breen describes the colonists that came to Jamestown as tough, individualistic, and willing to exploit people and resources (24). The people of Virginia were willing to do whatever it took to make a quick buck. They exploited the land for tobacco and exploited the use of indentured servants and later slavery to do their work for them. The people that colonized Virginia did not live close together like inhabitants of most other colonies. This was as Breen put it a cultural phenomena (25). I think he means that the people were physically seperated and this led to more and more feelings of individualism because unlike in other colonies the people were not able to have much of a feel for community or group preservation even. They were merely nterested in taking care of themselves. It was more than Just an individualistic approach, there was definitely amoney- above-all ideology in the colony of Virginia. The people of Virginia were obsessed with making a profit. They were highly competitive with each other. Virginians did not want to take the time away from tobacco farming long enough to help protect their colony because they were concerned that their neighbors would take advantage of their absence to get ahead. (29) The lack of being able to come together and form a military hurt Virginians by leaving them vulnerable to attack by Native American peoples. The Virginian colonists were so caught up in Just farming tobacco and protecting themselves that they didnt have any formal military. The people didnt see the point in defending others and thought that everyone should simply defend their own land. This left them open to being taken advantage of by privitized military groups looking to make a profit. (30). Also in trying to be more individualistic it actually made Virginia need to be more dependent on England to support them by sending troups. (32) but I did find a few contradictions. In the text it talks about how by 1624 tobacco was producing big profits for andowners who could grow it (59). The people coming to Virginia were looking to make a profit on tobacco and most of them were men, and the ever growing need for labor was met mostly with male indentured servants. There was a very unbalanced male:female ratio in Virginia that made it difficult to sustain the highly family centered existence found in the other colonies. The text also talks about how after being attacked by Opechancanough the colonists of Virginia organized themselves into military bands (58). I find this hard to believe based on Breens essay because e talks explicitly about how the society was so individualistic and competitive that the people did not want to serve in a military and were more interested in protecting their estates on their own. Another thing I thought was connected was how Breen talked about how the people of Virginia were more than willing to exploit labor for a profit so it makes sense how the text says that Virginia had an extremely large slave population once slavery became more of a common occurance. Virginia had a slave population of 187,600 in 1770 (135). This number is more than double that of any other colony at the time. . I do agree with Breens point of view and for the most part it agrees with our text. I would probably be more likely to agree with Breen that the people of Virginia did not form a military band and fight back against the Indians especially how the text talks about Indians remaining a strong presence. It wouldnt make much sense for the Indians to remain a strong presence if they are constantly being attacked by the settlers. I think the reason that the Indians stayed around is because Virginia was not effectively fghting them off because they didnt have any type of formalized military, r formalized anything for that matter, not even schools. 5. Slavery in New York City, 1731 ALAW For Regulating Negroes and Slaves in the Night Time I dont think that this document had too much to do with Breens essay Looking Out For Number One but rather it comes slightly later. I do think that the drastic rise in slave labor shows how Virginia was willing to exploit people in order to turn a profit and how it would be necessary for them to enact laws regulating the liberties of slaves to keep them from rising up when the population of Africans is roughly 42% of the total population. Recollections of the Middle Passage, 1788 Again I dont think this has much to do with Looking Out for Number One but it does tell in graphic detail the hardships that colonists were willing to put other humans through for their own benefit. Virginia, A Troubled Colony, 1622 Okay, I know it said to use documents from chapter 3 but this was the only document I found entirely relevant so I decided to include it as well. It talks about how the distance from each other and how it leaves them very vulnerable to attack by Indians. The city itself had no walls or fortification and the attempts at fortification that the olony had made were not even serviceable for the most part. The document talks about how the colonists are charging each other inflated prices for their food. It seems to me that it correlated with what Breen is saying in how there is no real sense of community so the colonists of Virginia would charge their neighbor the same rate they would probably charge England. I also think that most of their time was spent trying to produce exports for profit that they did not spend as much time creating a surplus of food for harsh winters and probably suffered during that time.

My data suggests that I prefer young people for old people in general. I have to agree to my results because I am prejudice against those who are old in terms of a resource for information. In this world we live in, it is the young teaching the old about the new world. Technology advances and everything that surrounds have propelled young people to be much more successful and the new thinking has increased the standard of living. I do not believe it is difficult to measure a person’s prejudice, this test though rather boring, proved my prejudice for preferring young people over the old. I still think there are old people who contribute however it is the young who will continue to influence the world and take society into new places. Sociologists probably use similar tests like this and another test they might take are surveys which contain statements that might suggest prejudice.

Overview of the Data Protection Act Task 2 For the purpose of this task. I am going to do the following: I am going to discuss the Data Protection Act. I am going to discuss what the data protection is. I am going to discuss the rights to a persons personal protection. I am going to look at the aims to their rights. I will identify the rights of people in relation to the data protection, and give eight samples. I will look at when these rights do not apply. I will discuss how a person can have access to their details. I will discuss the role of the Data Commissioner. I will also discuss the role of the Data Receiver. The role of the Data Controller will also be discussed. I will give two examples of breach of data legislation relating to healthcare. 1. What is Legislation? Legislation governs communication in Ireland concerned with communication freedom of information act. It was amended in 2003 and is called the Data Protection Act. What is the Data Protection When you give personal details to an organisation or individual, they have a duty to keep these details private and safe. This process is known as Data Protection. They refer to organisations or individuals who control the contents and use of a persons details as data controllers. Most people give information about themselves to groups such as Government bodies, i.e, banks, insurance companies, medical professionals and telephone companies to use their service or meet a certain source. Under data Protection Law, you have the rights regarding the use of these personal details and data controllers have certain responsibilities in how that handle this information. Identify the rights of people in relation to Data Protection: The right to have your details used in line with Data Protection Regulations. The right to information about your personal details. Thee right to prevent the use of your personal details. The right to change or remove your personal details. The right to remove your details from a direct marketing list. The right to refuse direct marketing calls or mail. The right to object. The right to freedom from automated decision making. When have you the right to Data Protection? You Have the right to Data Protection when your details are: Held on a computer. Held on paper or other manual form as part of a filling system. Made up a photograph or video recordings of your image or recordings of your voice. What are the aims of these rights? Data Protection rights will help you make sure that the information stored about you is Factually correct. Only available to those who should have it. Only used for stated purposes. When do Rights not Apply? The rights does not apply, however, in a small number of cases, where it could harm certain interests for example, when someone ids investigating an offence. How do I request access to my details? You can ask for a copy of all your personal details by writing to any organisation or any You can also ask the Data Controller to inform you of any opinions given about you, unless the Data Controller considers that the opinions are confidential. Even in such cases, your rights to such information will usually be greater than the right of the person who gave this information will usually be greater than the right of the person who gave this opinion in private. 8. What is the Role of the Data Commissioner? The role of the Data Commissioner aims to make sure that those rights are being upheld and that Data Controllers respect data protection rules. Summary proceedings for an offence under the Data Protection Act may be brought and prosecuted by the data Protection Commissioner. The Role of the Data Controller: A Data Controller is the individual or the legal person who controls and is responsible for the keeping and use of personal information on a computer or in structured manual files. Will keep or process any information about living people. They are responsible for the personal data which it holds. They decide what personal information is going to be kept. They decide the use to which the information will be put. The Role of the Data Receiver. A Data Receiver is a person who provides personal information about themselves to a variety of organisations for a whole range of purposes i.e, when you go to the doctor you give him/her information about yourself, name, address, date of birth, if you have children, and your phone number. Give two examples of Data Legislation: Sample One: The office received a complaint from a solicitor acting on behalf of a data subject concerning the alleged further proceedings of the complaints personal data contained in medical records held by her General Practitioner (G.P.). It was alleged that medical records relating to the complaint were released to an Insurance Company by her G. P, following a request made to her G.P. The complaint stated that the G.P, had received a request from an Insurance Company, seeking the complainant medical records, relating to a knee injury she had suffered. It was alleged that, in replying to this request, the G.P, not only realised data relevant to the knee injury, but also disclosed other sensitive medical information including cervical smear test results, colposcopy, correspondence regarding lesions and records relating to Carpel Tunnel Syndrome, none of which were related to the knee injury. We wrote to the G.P, and we asked that he provide an explanation as to what had occurred in this case. He responded stating that an Insurance Company had requested relevant information with respect to the patient concerned and her knee injury. He informed us that the request received, stated that it required copies of clinical consultations/surgery notes, investigations and associated results, treatments, referrals, out-patients appointments and repeat prescriptions from 18 02 2009 to the present date. He stated that, inadvertently, copies of the patient records were supplied to the Insurance Company with some details which were not relevant to her knee injury and that this was obviously an oversight. He stated that he was deeply sorry that he has caused any distress or upset to his patient, whom he has known for thirty-five-years. The G.P, stated that the company knew he always endeavoured to keep high standards in the practice and that she should understand his disappointment that the system used in releasing this information fell below that standard expected by the complainant and himself. He further stated that he hoped that she would accept his unreserved apology for the inadvertent disclosure of her records to the Insurance Company and that he completely understood how upset and appointed she must be. He said that since this unpleasant and unfortunate error he had overhauled his practice procedures. We wrote to tell the solicitor for the complainant outlining the G.Ps response and also conveying the G.Ps apologies. We stated that this offices approach to complaints is to try to seek an amicable resolution to the matter which is the subject of the complaint and we asked if his client would like to try to reach an amicable resolution of the complaint. They responded stating that their client wished for a formal decision of the commissioner on the matter. In considering this case, the key issues from a Data Protection perspective was the issue of consent. It was noted from the material provided that the complainant had completed and signed an insurance claim form which contained the following consent clause: I authorise Financial Insurance Company Limited (the underwriters) to make any enquires and get any information they consider relevant from my doctor, employers or elsewhere. I understand that I must provide evidence to Financial Insurance Company Limited to prove my claim form. On the same claim form, the complainant supplied details of her accident and explained as follows, Why it prevented her from walking? left knee injury, tore ligaments, recovery time unknown, waiting for knee surgery, on waiting list. The Insurance Company concerned had sought the complainants medical records, supplied the relevant consent form and used the following terms in its request to the G.P.: Can you please provide us with copies of the claimants medical records relevant to this claim. This includes all records relating to the medical conditions and associated symptoms which are subject of this claim. It was clear from the Insurance Companies request for medical records that it sought medical records relevant to the claim only. As the claim related to the complainants knee injury, the medical records sought related to that injury and the request did not extend beyond that. Equally the complainants consent authorised the Insurance Company to make injuries and to get any information concerned relevant from her doctor and others. The consent was clearly limited to relevant information and it could not be interpreted as extending to all medical records held by the G.P. This office issued a decision on this complaint which stated that the commissioner was of the opinion, following the investigation of this complaint, that section 2 (1) (C) (ii) of the Data Protection Acts, 1988 2003 had been contravened by the G.P, by the further processing of the complainants sensitive Personal Data in the form of medical records unrelated to her knee injury. The contravention occurred when the G.P, in responding to a request from and Insurance Company, disclosed to that Insurance Company certain medical records of the complainant without her consent.

Ida Jean Orlando Nursing Theory Essay

Ida Jean Orlando, an American of Italian descent was born in 1926. She received her nursing diploma from New York Medical College, Lower Fifth Avenue Hospital, School of Nursing, her BS in nursing from St. John’s University, Brooklyn, NY, and her MA in mental health nursing from Teachers College, Columbia University, New York. Orlando was an Associate Professor at Yale School of Nursing where she was Director of the Graduate Program in Mental Health Psychiatric Nursing. While at Yale she was project investigator of a National Institute of Mental Health grant entitled: Integration of Mental Health Concepts in a Basic Nursing Curriculum. It was from this research that Orlando developed her concept which was published in her 1961 book, The Dynamic Nurse-Patient Relationship. She furthered the development of her theoretical concept when at McLean Hospital in Belmont, MA as Director of a Research Project: Two Systems of Nursing in a Psychiatric Hospital. The results of this research are contained in her 1972 book titled: The Discipline and Teaching of Nursing System. Orlando held various positions in the Boston area, was a board member of Harvard Community Health Plan, and served as both a national and worldwide consultant. She is a frequent lecturer and conducted numerous seminars on nursing mechanisms. Orlando’s theory was developed in the late 1950s from observations she recorded between a nurse and patient. Despite her efforts, she was only able to categorize the records as â€Å"good† or â€Å"bad† nursing. It then dawned on her that both the formulations for â€Å"good† and â€Å"bad† nursing were contained in the records. The role of the nurse is to find out and meet the patient’s immediate need for help. From these observations she formulated the deliberative nursing process. The Metaparadigm Concepts include: Human/Person – An individual in need Health – No restricted definition Society/Environment – No restricted definition Nursing – A distinctive profession â€Å"Providing direct assistance to individuals in whatever setting they are found for he purpose of avoiding, relieving, diminishing, or curing the individual’s sense of helplessness† The patient’s presenting behavior may be a plea for help, however, the help needed may not be what it shows to be. Therefore, nurses need to use their perception, thoughts about the perception, or the feeling engendered from their perceptions to explore with patients the meaning of their behavior. This process helps the nurse find out the nature of the distress and what help the patient requirements. Orlando’s theory remains one the of the most effective practice theories available. The use of her theory helps keeps the nurse’s focus on the patient. The strength of the theory is that it is clear, concise, and easier to use. While providing the overall framework for nursing, the use of her theory does not exclude nurses from making use of other theories while caring for the patient. When using Orlando’s theory, the nurse identifies her own perceptions, thoughts, and feelings about the patient’s behaviors, then confirms them with the patient. She then formulates deliberative nursing actions to meet direct patient needs. As a final step, the nurse verifies whether or not she met the patient’s needs and decreased his distress, and determines if further action is required. The theory merges competent nursing practice and customer satisfaction. A question such as how can one be helped? This clarifies the nurse’s assumptions about patient needs and minimizes resource maltreatment. The nurse concentrates on relieving patient distress. Interventions address the patient’s requirements from the patient’s perspective. Orlando’s patient-focused theory gives nurses a lucid, consistent approach. It’s interpersonal, straightforward, and applicable to both simple and complex situations. Nurses can apply the theory independently or as an entire department. When nurse leaders initiate the theory’s use in their departments, nurses are given a tool to satisfy patients and themselves. This, in turn, satisfies organizational and staff by providing retention goals. Because nurses can use the method even with time, energy, and financial constraints, they can minimize frustration associated with â€Å"doing more with less. † Also, nurses feel rewarded when they can rediscover their unique contribution to patient care-meeting the patient’s immediate needs. Cost-effective interventions like using this theory add value to nursing assistance at a time when it’s difficult to increase time with patients. Nurses can maximize their time, creating â€Å"magic moments† with patients and providing the best intercession. They can meet immediate patient needs, reduce patient distress, and feel empowered and contended. In all, these concepts by Orlando form the basis for providing nurses an opportunity to understand their relationship with their patients in a better way, so as to give patient care a new and whole hearted meaning.
